YEOFORD Primary School is extremely proud of its four mathematicians who beat teams from much bigger schools to win this year’s Exeter Primary Schools Maths Challenge.

The team of Jess, Ellie, Hayden and Jonny from Years 5 and 6 showed they could do mental arithmetic, (no calculators allowed), as well as working out how to make things.

The final last week was held at St James’ School, Exeter. Twenty schools took part at the start of the challenge, 10 taking part in the final.

Yeoford School headteacher, Mr Peter Halford, said the school was extremely proud of the four, especially as some of the schools in the challenge had 10 times as many pupils as this 50-pupil school.

Hayden said there had been a marathon round which included a lot of mental arithmetic as well as a multiple choice round.

Jess said another part of the challenge was to make a 3-D dome out of newspaper and sticky tape using scissors. Size did not matter although more points were awarded for the bigger the dome.

All four said they had enjoyed the day and found it an interesting challenge. Last year Yeoford came third in the challenge.
