ON Mothering Sunday, March 14, Abigail Hardiman led the service, when her theme was "Who Cares?".
The family challenge was to show photos or objects which remind us of people who have cared for us. Abigail spoke of how Jesus showed love by acts of service, words of affirmation, touch, quality time and gifts. Photos submitted by a number of people showed love in the above ways.
The reading from Exodus 2 told how baby Moses was put in a basket among the rushes by his mother, Jochebed, to save him from being killed on Pharaoh’s orders.
The baby was found and adopted by Pharaoh’s daughter.
The story shows how much Moses’ mother and sister cared for him and how the princess was willing to disobey her father to adopt and educate the baby. Abigail asked if God was calling us to the river to play our part in caring for others. She spoke of atrocities in war zones, of ethnic cleansing and racism.
She asked what difference we could make?
We can support refugees, show care for our neighbours and Abigail referred to the posies made by various people and given out to show we care.
We should be channels of God’s love in our community. We might say it is too big a task for individual people but we should remember how the caring of Moses’ mother, sister and the princess resulted in Moses being the person God used to save thousands of people.
Our final hymn said "As God loves us, so let us love each other". Abigail prayed that we could show God’s unconditional love and show that He cares.
