CHILDREN from years Three and Four at Hayward’s Primary School took part in a World War Two-themed day to commemorate the 75th anniversary of The Blitz.

All the children dressed as evacuees and were dropped off at Crediton Parish Church by their parents.

To start the day the children walked through the High Street (causing quite a stir!) to Crediton Congregational Church where they listened to a talk about the local area in the war, kindly given by Keith Parsons and Maureen Kelly.

Once back at school, the children all took part in artefact handling, a session on evacuation, ration-time cooking and trained as ARP (Air Raid Precautions) wardens.

They even experienced their own "air raid" inside their own mock shelter.

For lunch the children had wartime foods and at 2.30pm were visited by older members of the community who joined them in singing wartime favourites such as "Pack Up Your Troubles" and shared their wartime stories.

Class teacher, Hannah Down, explained: "All of the staff and pupils involved had a brilliant and memorable day which was made all the more poignant by timing it in the week leading up to Remembrance."
