DESPITE the global pandemic, World Book Day was celebrated by pupils from Landscore Primary School in Crediton, wherever they were learning.

On Thursday, March 4, key worker pupils joined their friends learning at home for book themed zoom calls and to listen to their teachers read them stories or excerpts of their favourite books.

In the morning the daily class and year group zoom sessions allowed pupils in school and at home to share their costumes with one another.

Then pupils in school joined a zoom session hosted by Crediton Community Bookshop with students at Hayward’s, Copplestone and Bow Primary Schools to learn about their top six books. These sessions had been pre-recorded and the links shared with pupils based in their homes.

Throughout the day there were additional zoom sessions when teachers read to a range of pupils at home and their key worker bubbles.

These stories included: “The Three Little Pigs” from “Revolting Rhymes” written by Roald Dahl and read by Mrs Houston; “What A Mess goes to School” by Frank Muir read by Mrs Main and Coco, the Landscore School Dog; and “Mission Survival” by Bear Grylls read by Mr Wilcox.

All pupils were also invited to take part in a toilet roll character challenge set by Babcock School Library Service. Children were invited to create their favourite book character or book by decorating a toilet roll.

There were lots of brilliant entries and the winners were: EYFS – Hugo Carr, Superworm, Team 2 – Rory Laird, The Enormous Crocodile and Team 3 – Violet Dunlop, Tilly the Mermaid.

Mrs Main, Headteacher said: “The day was a great way to build the excitement for all children returning to school on Monday, March 8. Despite the different circumstances we have had a brilliant day. We are so excited to see them all in person again.”
