I AM a pensioner who has lived in the town for 50 years. I try hard not to get angry these days, because it only serves to put my blood pressure up! Now, though, my blood boils at what they are trying to do to Kirton - they are trying to close the Library, a source of pleasure to both young and old. They are trying to close the Youth Centre, so instead of keeping the children off the streets, they are forcing them out there again. They are trying to close the Hospital which was built to provide Kirtonians with beds to recover from operations, strokes and sickness. They are closing St Lawrence Residential Home and day care. Now the elderly will have to go further afield for care, which is not only unfortunate for them but for their families, many of whom do not have a car to use to visit them. The High Street is not the pleasant area to shop as it used to be, many small businesses have closed or are struggling to keep going. Once again, not everybody has the necessary transport to visit the supermarkets. Can we not resurrect Kirton from turning into a ghost town but turn it back to the thriving community it used to be?
