THE story appeared in the "Courier" on Friday, January 9, issue 1015.
Lobbying by Crediton Town Council and local MP Mel Stride resulted in a major concession, from the Government, for motorists in Crediton.
Loading bays in Crediton are not easily identifiable and hundreds of motorists have been prosecuted for parking in the bays, unaware of the restrictions.
Following a number of complaints, Crediton Town Council took up the issue on behalf of the motorists and Mel Stride, MP for Central Devon and Cllr Liz Brookes - Hocking met with the Minister and officers for the Department of Transport when it was agreed to make them clearer - the loading bays can be painted a different colour and more signs can be erected if needed.
It is hoped that this will make the loading bays stand out and make motorists more aware of which bays are for normal parking and which are for loading.

Marking the bays in a different colour would be a good idea as people look and see a P for parking and think it's ok to park without checking the times. There has been confusion in Market Street and the signs are not always easy to see. It is confusing, especially for older people. We do need to have loading bays, but we also want to keep the High Street busy.

It is a good idea to paint coloured lines around the loading bays as it will make people more aware of them. It's a good idea if it helps people.
Cllr Dan Webb, Crediton Coffee Company
The parking problems drive customers out of the town. Unclear markings are confusing for customers, and delivery drivers as to how long they have to load or unload. Traffic wardens can be inconsistent. I would be in favour of coloured markings to make the bays clearer. A lot of customers, who have had tickets, say they will not come back. I would prefer to see a reduced number of loading bays, but for them to be permanent, this would be much less confusing.
