A CREDITON man has admitted causing the death of a 10-year-old boy in a hit-and-run collision in Crediton in February.
Cameron Trivett (24), appearing at Exeter Crown Court, admitted causing the death of Samuel Crocker in Threshers, Crediton, by driving without due care and reasonable consideration under the influence of drink, and causing death by driving while uninsured.
He also admitted driving a Vauxhall combo van which failed to stop but pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
Prosecutor Peter Coombe said those pleas were acceptable. He said the consumption of alcohol was one of several aggravating features in the case.
Judge Philip Wassall remanded Trivett in custody and said he will be sentenced on July 24 at Exeter Crown Court.
He warned him that he faces a lengthy jail term.
Judge Wassall spoke to Samuel's devastated family in the court telling them that Samuel was at the forefront of the sentencing judge's mind and he described it as "an appalling tragedy" and an "immeasureable loss".
Miss Emily Pitts, defending, said Trivett was aware of being sent to jail adding: "He is incredibly sorry for their loss which may be scant comfort to them."
The case was adjourned for a pre sentence report to address the length of sentence in what the judge called a "serious offence".
