DUE to retirement and young players going off to music colleges and universities, Crediton Town Band has a number of vacancies for players.

Band member, Eric Parkes, told the “Courier: “To protect the continuity and future of the band, it is most vital that the band fills these vacancies as soon as possible.

“This may suit someone who played in their early days and now in later life would like to take up playing once more.

“It may also suit those who have always had a desire to learn to play a brass instrument or percussion but never got the opportunity. If they would like to learn the basics we would be most willing to teach them.

“The band is made up of players of musical playing abilities and therefore people should not be deterred if they feel that their own capabilities would not be good enough.

“A number of the present band had never played a brass instrument before joining the band and from playing have improved their capabilities. Age does not matter or whether you are male or female."

Mr Parkes said that over the years a large number of the younger players have gone on to a career in the music industry after music college and university, some becoming music teachers and others going into the Armed Forces.

He said one person is now a member of the Royal Marines Band.

He continued: “We are very proud that we have played a part in helping these people to fulfil their future career.”

Mr Parkes said there has always been a town band in Crediton, with the earliest recollections going back to 1857.

The current Town Band, he explained, was formed in 1984 to take part in the community play “Today of All Days”.

The band has progressed and developed to the high performing standards of the current band.

He explained: “Since the band was re-formed it has played in France, Belgium, Germany and Holland, at International Wine Festivals, on the famous bandstand in Ostend, Belgium and in 2004 appearing on the stage of Euro Disney, Paris.

“We are also very proud of a very active social side to the band with a number of activities taking place during the year.

“Wherever the band has gone we have always been privileged to represent the town of Crediton.

“It is to this end that we now ask for help to safeguard the band’s future.”
