TWO prizes have been won by the Tarka Line, the Barnstaple-Exeter railway line. They are the free book, Tarka Line Walks and Barnstaple Stationmaster's Cafe.
The book, written by Peter Craske and produced by the Tarka Rail Association, was judged Best Marketing Publication by the Association of Community Rail Partnerships (ACoRP), beating a strong field of contenders from across the UK.
At the awards ceremony in Carlisle, the judges praised the book's "wow factor" and that it is available free of charge. More than 5,000 copies have already been distributed.
Peter Craske was also shortlisted as Volunteer of the Year. He said he was "absolutely delighted" that his book had won first prize. "It's been a total labour of love," he said.
Peter has known the line since the 1940s. "Researching and writing up these walks from stations along the line has been a way of giving back to the county that I love," he added.
Busy on a second volume of Tarka Line Walks, Peter plans to expand the series to include other lines in Devon.
While stocks last, copies are available at Crediton Station Tearooms, the Mare and Foal at Yeoford, or the Fox and Hounds at Eggesford. Judges came from the Midlands to the cafe as "mystery shoppers" and were impressed by the quality of food, warmth of welcome and ready willingness with which proprietor Mike Day offered advice to visitors.
