THE A377 between the Tesco roundabout and Newton St Cyres is likely to remain closed for the next few hours after two cars clipped each other just after 5pm, during rush hour this evening, Tuesday, November 28.
The cars collided on the straight section of road between the Downes House entrance and Downes Bridge.
The vehicles involved were a 66-plate black VW and an X-registration silver VW polo.
The front drivers side wheel of the silver VW polo was completely detached from the car and came to rest about 10 yards in front of the car in the middle of the road.
Emergency services are currently at the scene.
No-one is believed to be seriously injured but an ambulance attended and is believed to have taken one of the occupants of one of the vehicles to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.
Police have closed the A377 road in both directions and there are long-tailbacks of traffic between Exeter and Crediton.
Alternative routes are being advised by the police via Bickleigh and the A3072, however small country roads in the area are becoming gridlocked.
Passengers on a Stagecoach bus, one carrying a large mirror she had purchased in Exeter, walked beside the accident scene to make their way home to Crediton after the incident.
Stagecoach South West says that the 5 and 5A services are being diverted via Bickleigh/Cadbury and into Crediton in both directions.
Recovery vehicles are being awaited at the scene.
Further updates as we have them.
