ONE of the suggestions shared at the Wednesday youth club run by Crediton Town Council, was the setting up of a youth club tuck shop.
Two very keen young people have headed this project, writing letters to local supermarkets asking for possible donations.
With the help of Morrisons Community Champion, Mandy Fosbrooke, the tuck shop is now fully stocked and trading.
This is a fantastic initiative that has been driven by the young people themselves, giving them the opportunity to think about pricing, simple bookkeeping, petty cash and stock taking as well as the importance of food hygiene.
Catherine Kelly, Community Youth Worker, explained: “The Tuck Shop is a great success.
“Chocolate, for example, sold out in two weeks!
“Feedback has been great, young people in years 5, 6, 7 and 8 are loving the independence of choosing and paying for their own snacks in a safe environment, learning to look after money and calculate change, as well as make healthy choices.
“Our two year 9 young leaders running the tuck shop are really enjoying the experience and responsibility and are learning new skills including stock taking and cashing up.
“They are ably supported by Emma Anderson, Assistant Town Clerk, who is also teaching them about food and hand hygiene.
“We can’t thank Morrisons enough for getting us started with this project.”
Crediton Youth Club is held at Old Landscore School.
It runs from 3.30pm to 5.45pm for Year 6,7 and 8 pupils and from 6.45pm to 9pm for those Year 8 plus.
