BORN and bred in Bow, a key member of the community, Alan Jewell who died after a short illness on September 12, was given many heartfelt tributes at his funeral service at St Bartholomew’s Church in Bow on Thursday, September 22.

The theme that ran through all of the tributes was of a kind, selfless, faithful man who was much loved by his family, friends and the wider community.

Tributes were given by Rev Lindsey Starrs of the North Creedy Ministry, who talked of the great support he had been to her as church warden for all of her time at Bow until recently when he retired.

She also talked of his sense of fun and some of their pre-service conversations about football and sausages!

Ken Hext, retired Methodist minister and former friend, who conducts a monthly service at Bow, spoke of Alan’s faith, his dedication and grace.

He said: “It was unthinkable that Alan (and his wife, Barbara) would no longer be sitting inside the door with their warm welcome and big smiles."

His three grandchildren, Kathryn, Paul and Abby all gave tributes in different ways and spoke of how lucky they were to have had such a wonderful, loving, selfless and caring grandad who was always there for them and that he will remain by their sides and in their hearts forever.

Finally a Eulogy written by daughters, Sandie and Sally, was read by son-in-law, Jerry.

They talked of Alan’s passions - Gardening and Football - recalling many favourite stories from Pumping the church organ when he was aged seven and carving his initials in the woodwork, to singing his favourite songs in the local pub.

They also spoke of his exceptional love and care of Barbara during her illness and how he had learned many household skills in his 80’s in his usual positive and optimistic style.

Having run the village shop and newsagents with Barbara for 25 years and being involved in the Church, Football Club and Bow Waterworks for much of his life, Alan was known, loved and respected by many.

The church was packed with family and friends, clergy past and present, former customers and a large contingent from Bow Football Club (wearing red ties and training jackets).

Alan left St Bartholomew’s church for the last time, played out to “Semper Fidelis”, a much loved piece of music meaning “Always Faithful” which also happens to be the signature tune of his lifelong supported football team, Plymouth Argyle!

The family would like to thank everyone who attended the funeral, have given support and for the numerous cards and heartfelt messages that they have received during this difficult time.

They are also most grateful for the generous donations given in Alan’s memory, which will be shared between Hospiscare and Dementia Awareness.

Special thanks go to Bow Medical Practice, Accident and Emergency and Kenn Ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Hatherleigh Medical Centre and Hatherleigh Care Village who have all cared for Alan so well during his short illness.

They would also like to thank, C.J Steer and Son, Rev Lindsey Starrs, Rev Ken Hext, Andy Dyer and The White Hart at Bow.

As said in one of the many cards of sympathy, Alan’s 83 years have been a blessing to us as a family and to so many others, he will be sadly missed by us all.
