CREDITON Library held its second annual Local History Day of talks and exhibits on Wednesday, July 3.
Brian Carpenter from the Devon Heritage Centre gave a very interesting and informative talk about the historical maps of Crediton.
Abi Innocent from Turning Tides described the history of Crediton Cinema through photos, stories, video and audioclips, which brought the cinemas to life.
After a break for lunch John Heal of Crediton Area History and Museum Society presented an intriguing session “Improving Crediton”, describing the changes to the town in the 19th Century including the creation of the market square.
Dr Paul Cleave, honorary fellow at the University of Exeter, gave a very enlightening presentation on food on the Home Front in the First World War. The audience also much enjoyed his home-baked Trench Cake.
The exhibits of maps from the Devon Heritage Centre, artefacts from the Museum of Dartmoor Life and items from the Boniface Collection at Crediton Library prompted a lot of interest and discussion. Everyone had a great day and the team is looking forward to next year.
Crediton Library is one of 50 Devon Libraries run by charity Libraries Unlimited.
Each library offers a range of events and facilities designed to help local communities connect, learn and realise their potential by promoting and encouraging a love of reading and providing free access to a wealth of materials and information.
