THE story entitled "Councillors vote in favour of tarmac rather than slabs along Crediton High Street pavements" appeared in the Crediton Courier on Friday, January 19, issue 1173.

CREDITON Town Council has opted by a vote of 5-3 to swap the paving slabs on the High Street for black tarmac.

The Town Council was given two options by DEvon County Council (DCC), the first to remove the slabs and replace with black tarmac. The second was, following a survey, three hotspot areas of existing slabs would be dealt with by relaying or replacing them. DCC did not list the hotspots.

Consultation with all the shops, businesses and residential properties in the area is planned and DCC is planning for the survey and some consultation to be undertaken before the end of March.

There was some dispute among town councillors about having tarmac, however it was said that several people in the town used motorised scooters and preferred tarmac as it was easier to travel over.

Councillors agreed that tarmac was less likely to cause a trip hazard.

Which would you prefer and why? Please let me know.

What you told us ...

The pavements are terrible. It’s not on when there are quite a lot of elderly people. I’ve caught my toe before, it’s easily done.

The pavements are dreadful. I do think tarmac would be better. I’m struggling on crutches. You just need to catch your toe to loose balance. It’s not good if you are unsteady on your feet. It might be cheaper to replace them in the long run - it might prevent compensation claims.

Emma Mew, Crediton

I think the pavements should be tarmacked because they are very uneven and difficult to walk on. The area outside Wedges cafe is particularly bad.

Mr Edwards, Crediton

I don’t think it would be as nice if the pavements were tarmacked, but it would be safer. I can see why they would want to change it - to avoid compensation claims. You can see where all our money goes when you see the pavements in Tiverton.
