AUGUST marks the 100th Anniversary of the opening of Upper Deck in Crediton.
To mark the occasion, Crediton Town Council is holding a commemorative service and is encouraging local organisations and residents to join councillors in celebrating the special event.
The service will take place on Saturday, August 22 at 11am.
In 1915, members of a local family offered to place seating, shelters and a flag-staff on the Upper Deck reservoir to make the area available for returning World War One soldiers to visit and enjoy the beautiful countryside.
An official opening ceremony was held on August 2, 1915.
From that point on, visiting Upper Deck, and taking in the countryside views, became part of the soldier’s recovery regime.
Local residents and visitors continue to enjoy the picturesque scenery that can be viewed from the Upper Deck viewpoint!
Plans to mark the event include a service lead by Reverend Prebendary Nigel Guthrie, a reading of the Act of Remembrance by the Royal British Legion and the placing of a commemorative plaque to mark the Anniversary.
