MANY members of the community will be pleased that the clock and chimes at Crediton Parish Church are now working again after recent repair work.
Luke Ridge, of the Cumbria Clock Company, installed three new auto wind motors on top of the clock mechanism. A number of parts had to be specially made for the clock which dates from 1838 and was made by Thwaites and Reed of London.
For many, many years the clock was wound by hand once or twice or week, but it has been electrically auto wound since 1997.
Parish Church member, Bill Jerman explained: "The clock started to go wrong last November and by January it became obvious that the three auto wind motors would need replacing.
"Within a fortnight of the story appearing in the ’Courier’ and thanks to a number of kind and generous residents all the funding was in place.
"Following obtaining the necessary works permissions we were able to place the order with the Cumbria Clock Company and we are now delighted the chimes and Crediton’s ’time’ have been restored."
Anyone who would like to see the clock mechanism and the new auto wind motors can do so at the forthcoming Heritage Open Afternoon at Crediton Parish Church on Sunday, August 12. There will be a tower tour at 2.30pm.
