MANY people of Crediton and District were very distressed last November, following an act of vandalism and arson, which damaged Crediton Town and Hamlets War Memorial. A big act of kindness, by F J Stevens and Son, memorial stone masons, was carried out and they have restored the stonework and cleaned off the fire damage staining. It now looks very good and in a proper condition to stand as a memorial to all those that made the ultimate sacrifice. F J Stevens also cleaned the Saint Boniface statue in Newcombes Meadow, so once again he can look our people in the eye without a stain on his character. I want to say a big thank you on behalf of the Royal British Legion and the people of Crediton. On Monday, June 22, to mark Armed Forces Day, members of the Crediton branch of the Royal British Legion and Crediton Town Council Deputy Mayor, Cllr Joyce Harris and council staff gathered to raise the Armed Forces Day flag on the council building in Market Street. It being a weekday the children were at school and the mum's and dad's at work, but the flag flies for all to see, as a reminder of the good work our Armed Forces do in helping the sick, distressed, and the oppressed people around the world. Each situation demands a great deal of skill and care, which can place a strain on the individual who then needs our support. On Thursday, July 9, members of Crediton branch of the Royal British Legion will be in the Town Square from 10am to 2pm as part of the Care in the Community event. Please come along and say hello and ask that big question, what does the Royal British Legion do? John Shaw Chairman Royal British Legion Crediton Branch
