THERE were celebrations at both local pubs at Tedburn St Mary and possibly at many local homes on the evening after it was announced that "The Gap" on the A30 road, closed for the past 18 months, could be re-opened.

The decision came in a judicial review and residents are now waiting to see what will happen next.

Chris Gibbs, vice chairman and spokesman of the A30 Fingle Glen Business and Community Action Group told the Courier: "Since the announcement there has already been an increase of trade at local businesses.

"We are waiting to hear what the Highways Agency is going to do - whether to go back to the plan for a bridge over the A30 with access slip roads or to leave the junction as it is but add more warning signs and safety notices.

"We have asked them to consult with us, the Action Group, before they say what they intend to do."

Les and Diana Rice of the Red Lion Inn held a barbecue to celebrate and Dean and Simone Singer of the Kings Arms served a special hog roast. Many people involved in the years of consultation and litigation had been invited, including Highways Agency representatives.

Among those who were able to be there were Barristers Gavin Collet (Lead Counsel) and Jonathan O'Neill (Junior Counsel) from Rougemont Chambers at Exeter.
