IF you have noticed a few somewhat strange floral displays this summer, it is all part of the fun of a competition to find the best floral bra-sket.
Women’s Institute members have been filling old, colourful bras with flowers, all part of a scheme with Suttons Seeds, continuing the WI’s recycling, re-using and sustainable gardening projects.
WIs were invited by the National Federation to use their imagination and have some fun using the bras as plant containers.
Tedburn St Mary WI is one that took up the challenge. All the filled bras, herbs and flowers, were on display at a coffee morning held at the home of president, Molly Hutchings and her husband, David, at Springfield.
Judge was neighbour David Ganderton and the winner was Hilary Pook with a fuchsia coloured bra filled with small deep pink and white dianthus (pinks) and lavender.
Runner-up was Di Alcock with two large pink flowers, one in each bra cup, among green leaves. Third place went to Ann Barnet with a bright bra full of flowers including lobelia and baby begonias.
The coffee morning was to raise funds for the WI college, Denman College in Oxfordshire.
The institute meets on the first Tuesday evening of each month at the village hall. For more information, please contact the secretary on 01647 24088.
