CHERITON Fitzpaine Primary School tag rugby team represented Exeter and Mid Devon in the Devon Primary County Final.

The team was drawn in a group with Newton Poppleford from East Devon, Brixham from South Devon and Kings School from Plymouth.

Their first game was against Newton Poppleford, which turned out to be an exciting game but Cheriton Fitzpaine lost by the odd try with a score of 6-5.

They followed that with some super rugby and a good 5-3 win against Kings School.

The next game was against Brixham with the winners going through to the trophy quarter finals. Again, it was close with tries being scored at both ends.

Cheriton lost out by the single try with Brixham winning 6-5. This put them third in the group and into the plate competition.

In the quarter-finals Cheriton played Compton School from Plymouth and, again, it was another nail-biting game with both teams playing excellent rugby.

The final score was 5-5 with the game going into a sudden death extra time. Whoever scored the first try would go through to the semi-finals.

Unfortunately Cheriton lost the coin toss and gave up a big advantage, which meant Compton scored with their first possession of the ball, despite the Cheriton putting in some excellent tagging.

The final match saw Cheriton get a well-deserved win in another end-to-end game of rugby 6-5 against Goosewell School of Plymouth.

The team has been exceptional, both in attitude and playing ability for both rounds of the Devon Cup and for them to finish 13th overall in Devon is a fantastic achievement for a school of its size.

Well done to all the players who took part, Jamie, Evie, Caitlyn, Harri, James, Sophie, Leo, Samuel, Ella, Luke and also Holly who was unable to take part in the finals.

Thanks also go to the parents who transported the children and those who offered at such short notice.
