RETIRED archaeologist Dr Peter Marsden will give an illustrated talk at the Boniface Centre, Church Lane, Crediton on Monday, November 2, beginning at 7.30pm.

The talk is entitled "London and Exeter: A Tale of Two Roman and Saxon Cities."

London and Exeter are two important cities on opposite corners of southern Britain, both founded by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago.

One was a capital of the Roman Province of Britain, the other the tribal capital of the regional native British Dumnonii.

Both cities shared much but also had many differences.

Both were deserted in AD400 and both later re-established by the Saxons.

The talk will compare the first 1,000 years of history of the cities with some surprising and fascinating results.

Dr Peter Marsden is a professional archaeologists and author formerly at the Museum of London and Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

Early in 2015 a previous talk by this guest speaker entitled "Cess Pits, Cemeteries and Sewers, being an Archaeologist" proved to be both well attended and most interesting and informative.

Admission to the talk is priced at £10 and includes supper.

The Crediton Parish Church Campaign Roof Appeal has currently raised £78,000 of its phase one works target of £600,000.

Anyone wishing further information about either the talk or the Campaign Roof Appeal should contact Bill Jerman on 01363 772865.
