DURING the late afternoon of Saturday, January 13, a team of bell ringers from St Paul’s Cathedral in London will be ringing the bells at Crediton Parish Church for about 45 minutes.

They are visiting the South West and will be coming to Crediton after ringing at Exeter Cathedral.

Crediton ringer Robin Lavery, said: “In common with the band at Westminster Abbey, the team members are all members of the Ancient Society of College Youths.  This is a self-governing organisation and membership is by invitation only.

“Needless to say only the very best ringers receive an invitation.

“Although London-based they encourage membership from all over the world and we do indeed have four members here at Crediton, albeit no longer active with the ASCY.

“Several members of the Exeter Cathedral band are also members.”

Mr Lavery said that this will be an opportunity to hear Crediton Parish Church bells rung by an expert band and should be something worthwhile listening to.

He added: “Timing is inevitably approximate, but the guide time is 4.30pm to 5.30pm.  It is a compliment to our bells that this visit is being made.

“The Society is also organising practices in the South West area and there is a provisional date of the afternoon of Saturday, May 11 for one such practice to take place at Crediton.”
