School. Spreyton Primary School presented "Nobody Saves Christmas" in the village hall on Friday, December 11.

The Headteacher welcomed parents and public starting with "The Kings and Queen are in despair". A song Come and Join the Celebration was produced by Rosina Kellman and staff.

Chairman of governors' Audrey Lovell thanked everyone for coming and those who donated to this year's chosen charity for the school Macmillan Cancer Support.

Christmas lunch. The senior citizens Christmas lunch held in the village hall was organised by Hilary Elston, assisted by her husband Clifford and Lin Blake.

On arrival Douglas Endacott welcomed everyone with a glass of punch or fruit juice.

The Revd Russell Parker, Methodist minister, gave the grace.

Among the helpers, waiters and kitchen staff were Hilary Elston, Lin Blake, Cleave Collins, Judith and Tony Talbot, Bev and Dave Cunningham, Jane Lott, Robyn Elston, Rob and George Henderson, Wendy Sincock and Carolyn le Gros.

The main meal of turkey was prepared by Roger at the Tom Cobley Tavern and was followed by trifle and cream with a choice of tea or coffee.

Table decorations were done by Judith Talbot and Eve Collins.

Douglas Endacott introduced Eileen Stevens who played the organ for general singing and carols.

Alethea Kennerly provided the cake which with a glass of sherry ended an afternoon enjoyed by all present.

Christmas whist. The poultry and Christmas whist was held in the village hall in the evening, following the afternoon Christmas lunch. Some of those attending the lunch arranged the table for the event.

There were 211/2 tables playing for four turkeys, 10 chickens and many other Christmas prizes, totalling 26 altogether, plus more for the raffle.

Among the prizewinners were: ladies - J Alford, P Reed, Win Headon, S Bowden, J Western, M Riddaway, V Edworthy, Evelyn, A Scott, Pauline, J Burion, K Vile, J Plant. Gents - J Foster, D Callard, M Cooper, C Collins, C Taverner, J Poole, Oxo, R Rickard, D Yeo, K Marsh, Robin, M Reed and C Jones.

Among the many helpers were S Vile, E and C Collins, D Toms, R and B Pickard, A Hawkins, M Riddaway and K Vile was MC. Many whist players helped with moving chairs and tables.

Thanks were expressed to many who had supported the regular whist throughout the year, plus many who had very generously donated many of the raffle prizes.

The amount raised was more than £100.

The next whist will be held on Saturday, January 9 and will be in aid of the village hall.

Carol Service. St Michael's Church was full for the annual service of nine lessons and carols.

With the very cold weather and a light covering of show in the area, road conditions made driving dangerous.

The service was conducted by Lay Reader Catherine Martineau from Drewsteignton, who had struggled to make the service due to the weather.

The organist was Mrs Shirley Gillard. Lesson readers were K Vile, T Talbot, J Lott, L Shipley, P Hill, A Hawkins, T Matthews (Hittisleigh), E Collins and C Martineau.

The readers were organised by E Collins, assisted by H Powlesland.

The Christmas tree was provided by Lesley Jewell and family. She organised the decorating the previous day.

The candles were arranged by Ken Vile, assisted on the night by E Daw, Dr K Whitaker and D Endacott.

Many of the local bellringing team rang peals prior to the service.

A collection was taken by Dr K Whitaker, Eve Collins and John Williams.
