FOR the second year running, on Sunday, September 24, the Sparkle Warriers, will be taking part in the annual Dragon Boat race on Exeter Quay to raise much needed funds for Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).
The group raises funds for DAAT in memory of Samuel Crocker (10), who was knocked over and died following a “hit-and-run” on February 28, 2015, in Threshers in Crediton.
The driver, Cameron Trivett (24), of Mill Street, Crediton, subsequently admitted causing death by careless driving and was sentenced at Exeter Crown Court to four years in prison.
Samuel’s funeral service was held at Crediton Parish Church where an act of remembrance also took place shortly after the accident.
Floral tributes were left at the accident scene and his fellow pupils at Landscore Primary School were offered counselling and support and held their own acts of remembrance.
Fundraising and donations has raised more than £33,000 in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance Trust in memory of Samuel to-date.
Last year the Sparkle Warriors raised £640 and this year’s team hope to beat that sum.
The team is an eclectic mix and includes staff from Crediton Hospital, Chiddenbrook Surgery, VirginCare/Children’s Services (school nurses), Crediton Scout leaders, Landscore and ex-Landscore mums and dads and a number of children.
The team will comprise 16-plus paddlers and it will compete against a number of other locals teams.
Individual or business sponsors are now being sought by the Sparkle Warrior team.
Sara Fox, the team captain, said: “If you would like to sponsor us, we would be grateful for any donations and if you can come and support us on the day we would love to see you. It is a great fun day out…”
