WHEN pupils at Bow Primary School returned after half-term they found a big surprise in their pond. It contained loads of frogspawn.

The spawning frogs were found at the school's wild life area by William Pickard who has farmed almost next door for 75 years.

The area was created under his guidance in 1998, when he was a school governor and was designed by Peter Muggeridge and built by members of Bow Young Farmer's Club.

Mr Pickard said the frogs return there every year to spawn, staying perhaps as long as two days. He guesses there were about 100 in the pond, all scrambling for the best place to lay their spawn, their combined croaking sounding like a very loud purr. William described it as a "brrr" and it was surprisingly loud when close to.
