A SIX-year-old from Devon has been named a finalist in the Young Hero category of this year's BBC Make a Difference Awards.

Brody has been recognised for the kindness and compassion he shows to children who come into his family's foster home, helping them feel welcome during what can often be a difficult and uncertain time.

The BBC Make a Difference Awards celebrate people who make a positive contribution to their communities. Brody is one of four finalists shortlisted by BBC Radio Devon for the Young Hero Award, which recognises young people aged under 16 who have made a difference to the lives of others.

As the son of foster carers, Brody has played an important role in welcoming children into his home. Whether it's sharing his toys, helping new arrivals settle in, or simply being a friend, his caring nature has helped foster children feel safe, included, and valued.

Kim, Brody's mum, said: "He has shared not only his Mum, his home and his toys, but also his time, attention and family life with children who have often experienced significant challenges. Through it all, he has made incredible friendships with the children he now refers to as his special brothers and sisters."

Children arriving in foster care are often experiencing turbulent times in their lives. Small acts of kindness can make a real difference, and Brody's nomination recognises the positive impact he has had on children who have stayed with his family.

Sandra Carnall, Head of Service for Fostering and Kinship Care at Devon County Council, said: "Brody's nomination is a wonderful reminder that fostering is often a whole-family commitment. Children joining a foster family can be experiencing a very difficult period in their lives, and being welcomed by someone of a similar age can make a huge difference.

"The kindness, patience and generosity that Brody has shown to children coming into his home is something to be incredibly proud of. We are delighted to see his efforts recognised through these awards and wish him the very best of luck."

The winners of the BBC Radio Devon Make a Difference Awards will be announced at a celebration event later this year.

The warmth and kindness he has shown to children coming into his home demonstrates the important role the whole family can play in helping children feel safe, supported and valued.
