UPSTREAM, the local charity which works across Mid Devon, has secured funding from Mid Devon District Council to run Seated Exercise sessions, which are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at the Boniface Centre in Crediton.
The charity reaches out into local communities to help people who are mentally, physically or socially isolated to improve their health, well-being, quality of life and to prolong their independence.
It was set up by local GPs and members of the community in 2002 with a five-year grant from the Big Lottery Healthy Living Centre programme.
It helps older adults in Devon achieve a more independent, enjoyable and longer life within their communities.
Upstream rekindles and bolsters people’s passion for living through imaginative, creative and social activities – thereby promoting their health and well-being, reducing isolation, loneliness and reliance on health and social services.
Through Public Health funds from Mid Devon District Council, Upstream now offers the sessions for people to keep fit by taking part in chair-based exercise.
Each session includes social time and a healthy warming bowl of soup.
The exercises are gentle and easy-to-follow and those attending are advised to wear loose, comfortable clothing.
The classes are designed to strengthen the whole body and there is no need to book, just turn up.
The sessions run from 2pm to 3.30pm and the first one took place on Tuesday, January 17.
In addition, Upstream will also be offering some support to carers and will be looking to offer training (if wanted) to lead health walks for carers.
