Sandford Green Committee plea after firepit used

SANDFORD Millennium Green has issued a video and advice after its firepit has been used.

On the video it states: “Sandford Green events area is where we have our firepit.

“There have been endless warnings of no naked flames but someone has recently burned logs used for sitting on at our firepit which has resulted in scorched tree leaves above.

“Please, please no naked flames on the Millennium Green at all, hence the sign No Fires.”

The No Fires sign has been written on the ground in front of the firepit area in bright orange spray paint.

The public are also advised that a temporary disposable BBQ ban now in place.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said that with hot and dry weather continuing, wildfire severity across our two counties is expected to remain high over the next five days.

Most wildfires are preventable, and we are asking everyone to help reduce the risk by:

• Taking all litter home, especially glass bottles which can cause fires in direct sunlight.

• Never discarding lit cigarettes on the ground or from car windows.

• Avoiding BBQs in the countryside or other open spaces – a temporary ban on disposable BBQs is now in place.

• Avoiding bonfires, fire pits, and fireworks during this period.

• If you do choose to have a BBQ or fire pit at home, keep it away from fences, sheds and dry vegetation and never leave them unattended. Always have a bucket of water ready.

A small spark can quickly become a devastating wildfire, putting people, animals, homes, and our crews at risk.

• Pond clearing will take place at Sandford Millennium Green tomorrow, Monday, August 17 and Tuesday, August 18.

The public are advised that heavy plant vehicles will be used on site and the lay-by will be closed.
