THE Deputy Leader of Exeter City Council has praised the work of firefighters who tackled a significant wildfire at Mincinglake Valley Park.

A fire broke out at the nature spot on Tuesday, August 11, affecting around 50 acres of habitat. It is believed to have damaged fencing and other site infrastructure. No livestock was on site at the time of the fire, and no housing was damaged.

Mincinglake Valley Park is home to a range of common and less common wildlife, including many plants, songbirds, field voles, butterflies and moths.

Devon Wildlife Trust, which manages the site, has described the damage as “extensive”.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Deputy Leader and a ward councillor for Mincinglake and Whipton, said: “I would like to thank the firefighters and everyone involved in tackling the blaze at Mincinglake Valley Park. Their efforts helped bring a very difficult situation under control and are hugely appreciated by the local community.

“The valley parks are incredibly important places for local people, wildlife and the wider city, and Devon Wildlife Trust does an excellent job in caring for them. We all hope the affected area can recover as quickly as possible.

“I am heartened by offers of support from the local community. During this unprecedented heatwave and drought, I would urge everyone to be vigilant, take extra care and report any signs of fire immediately.”

Devon Wildlife Trust has asked the public to stay away from the site for the time being while it assesses the impact and identifies how to support the recovery of wildlife.

At its height, 20 fire appliances, including Crediton, a water bowser and other specialist equipment attended the scene, which was categorised as a major incident by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.
