SUMMERHAYES Care Home in Sandford has been named SME Employer of the Year at the 2026 Exeter College Apprentice and Employer Awards.

The SME Employer of the Year award recognises organisations that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to developing their workforce.

Representing Summerhayes at the awards ceremony were owner and Registered Manager Charlie Mason, Head of Training Jess Mason and Systems Manager Michelle Snell.

“Our head of training, Jess Mason, has played a leading role in creating and developing our apprenticeship programme, supporting staff through nationally recognised qualifications while introducing structured training pathways that help people build long-term careers in care,” said a Summerhayes spokesperson.

“Her passion for workforce development has also gained national recognition, with Jess recently being shortlisted for the National Care Awards in the category of Outstanding Contribution to Workforce Development.

“Beyond Summerhayes, Jess is also a Director of the Devon Care Homes Collaborative and Chairs the Devon "Into Care" Group, working with colleges and education providers to encourage more people into careers in social care and create opportunities for the future workforce.

“Charlie Mason, owner and registered manager, has always championed the importance of investing in people and creating opportunities for staff to thrive.

“Alongside Charlie's leadership, Michelle Snell has helped ensure the systems and operational support are in place to allow training and development to flourish across the home, creating an environment where staff feel valued, supported and empowered to progress.

“Winning SME Employer of the Year is a proud moment for everyone at Summerhayes and reflects our ongoing commitment to providing not only exceptional care for our residents, but also outstanding opportunities for our staff.

“We firmly believe that by supporting our team to learn, grow and develop, we are strengthening the future of social care within our local community.”
