THE MP for Central Devon, Mel Stride, has said he is concerned about the impact that coronavirus will have on local newspapers, which he has described as a “trusted source of important information and news”.

With strict controls on people’s movements, fewer people are heading out to pick up a local paper and others are concerned about whether copies delivered to homes are safe to handle.

Clarifying medical guidance on the issue Mr Stride said: “As we focus on looking after our mental health over the coming weeks and months, local newspapers remain an important way residents can stay in touch with what’s going on in their communities, especially if they don’t use the internet or social media.

"If you have gone shopping for essential items such as food, buying a local paper while you’re there is fine. It is also safe to continue to have your local newspaper delivered.”

For those with internet access, all local newspapers within Central Devon are available as digital content online via a subscription.
