Royal British Legion Crediton branch CREDITON Poppy Appeal has begun and, after a few little concerns during organising the rotas for collecting and preparing the boxes, it is going very well. The people of Crediton have shown to be very generous as ever, even in these difficult times. We urgently need more volunteers to give just two hours each of their time, either manning the high street or one or other supermarkets. Please consider being able to do so next year, contact me or another member of the Crediton Branch, with your name and telephone number and we will contact you. On Monday, November 3, Joyce Rook and helpers from Newton St Cyres held a "Meat Bingo" in aid of the Poppy Appeal. It was well-attended by the branch and a good time was had by all, as has been the case in previous years, when I was lucky enough to win a prize, Last house, number 13, 2013, but not on Monday though! The evening raised £218. Next year it will be held on November 2. On a more sombre note we are heading towards our Remembrance Sunday service and parade. This will begin on Sunday, November 9 at Crediton Parish Church at 10.30am. The recently-formed "Crediton Air Training Corp" and many other groups and individuals will take part. We welcome them to parade with us, and wish the new Corp all the best as they go from strength-to-strength in the future. Then on Tuesday, November 11, we observe a Two Minutes Silence at the Crediton Town and Hamlets War Memorial. No generation has ever managed to prevent war or involvement in conflict. All we that are present can do is remember, with respect, those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Looking ahead, on Wednesday, November 19, from 7.30pm and by kind permission of Crediton Rugby Football Club, there will be a charity match in aid of the Poppy Appeal. This will be between Crediton Thirds and Veterans and Ide RFC. I am sure, no matter what the score, it will be a great game. It will be held on the pitch which is at the Shobrooke Hill end of Exhibition Road. This will be the occasion when Crediton RFC will be "officially" switching on their new flood lighting for the first time. All are invited to attend and raise your voices and money for the Poppy Appeal. John Shaw Chairman Crediton branch Royal British Legion
