CHERITON Fitzpaine Garden Club held its Summer Show on a warm August afternoon, which saw a record number of entries, especially for the flower arranging classes.
A recent workshop organised by Andrew Dean and Susan Tucker gave several novices the confidence to enter.
As always, the tearoom did a roaring trade, and there were children’s activities in the marquee. A full plant stall was well-patronised.
Paula Mossman excelled herself, winning cups for the best exhibit in the cut flower section (Gladioli), the best collection of garden produce and her cactus pot-plant. This meant that she won the Cup for the Most Points in the Show.
Chairman Andrew Dean won the Elinor Bond Cup for the runner-up to Most Points in the Show.
The Silver Cup for most points gained in the Vegetable Section and the Canning-Cooke cup for the best exhibit in the vegetable section was won by John Brown.
The Reg Pike Trophy for most points in the Flower Arranging Section and the Old Beams Moon Vase for the most outstanding exhibit went to Joan Jenner.
The First Timer’s Cup for Most Points in the Show went to Christine Dean, who also won the Gardener’s Challenge Cup for the best pot plant grown from plugs supplied earlier (Geranium).
The Carr Shield for the best yield of potatoes grown by schoolchildren was presented to Belle Tonkin, whose yield weighed almost two-and-a-half kilos!
The Brownies Cup for making a Candle went to Eleanor Lane and Lucy Bartlett won the Rainbow’s competition. The Rabbit Trophy was claimed by Lucy Cavill.
A competition “The People’s Choice” attracted a large number of entries. Jacquie Bausch won the Flower Arranging section with a beautiful blue arrangement depicting Lace Anniversary and Monika Brown won the Pot Plant section with a Streptocarpus.
Holly Metcalf won the Children’s Flower Arranging Section and also had an entry in the Adult Classes - a talent to watch!
In the week before the Show, Tubs and Hanging Baskets in the Village were judged. Phil and Christine Dean won both classes!
Prizes were presented by garden club President, Sarah Tricks.
The next monthly meeting will be held on Thursday, September 20, when we shall learn about “Square Metre Gardening”.
