AT its January meeting Shobrooke Friendly Club was scheduled to have a talk by Steve Adams of Homeleigh Garden Centre, Crediton, on the progress and development of the Centre since being taken over by that firm.

Unfortunately only about two hours before the meeting was due to commence, secretary Eileen James received a call from Mr Adams to say that he would not be able to give his talk as he had been unexpectedly called to a meeting at Launceston.

With little time to spare, Eileen hurriedly put together a cryptic quiz on the names of sweets and chocolates, and also telephoned Margaret and Norman Gale to see if they had any quizzes suitable for the afternoon.

Luckily, Norman was able to come up with a picture quiz and a couple of others relating to proverbs and the books of the Bible, which he had used at the recent Shobrooke Harvest Festival Supper.

All in all it appears that the members enjoyed the afternoon, as the quizzes certainly had them discussing amongst themselves as to the answers.

Tea and biscuits were served by the usual “tea boys”, Clifford and Dave.

Jacquie reminded members of the times and places of pick-up for the coach on January 29 for the Tiverton Pantomime, “Sleeping Beauty”.

The next meeting will be held at Newton St Cyres Parish Hall on February 19, at 2.15pm when Mr R Mear, Former Headmaster of Newton St Cyres Primary School, will talk on his experiences and reminiscences whilst the Headmaster.
