A BRAVE band of cyclists and runners took part in a coast-to-coast run and cycle across Devon last Sunday (March 27), to raise funds to provide a local child with a special trike.

More than a dozen took part, some completing part of the route, others completing the full 58-mile challenge from Saunton Sands in North Devon to Dawlish Warren in South Devon – all in one day.

Thomas Saunders (6), a pupil at Copplestone Primary School, was diagnosed with a brain tumour in December.

He has been undergoing a year-long programme of chemotherapy/radiotherapy treatment at Bristol Hospital.

Three people, Jenny Wood, Mark Rice and Jim Pickett, decided to organise a fundraiser to help Thomas.

Jenny explained: "We really wanted to do something for the family and suggested ideas were to buy a specially adapted bicycle to aid in his rehabilitation when he eventually gets back onto his feet (he currently can't walk, but hopefully will make a full recovery eventually), or other equipment that may make life easier for him."

As part of the fundraising, Jenny organised, by kind permission of Jason Mew Furniture, Exeter Road, Crediton, a coffee morning at the business premises.

Jay Creations were there with a huge selection of unique hand-made jewellery and fused glassware. From the sales, 10 per cent went to the appeal.

Jenny said: "A big 'thank you' to Jason and Emma Mew for allowing us to hold the jewellery event and coffee morning at Jason Mew Furniture.

"We raised £300 for Thomas, and would like to say 'thank you' to everyone who came to support the event."

Thomas's mum, Stephanie, told the Courier: "I would like to say a big 'thank you' to everyone who took part in the challenge and supported it in any way.

"Also to Jason Mew Furniture and Jay Creations and others who have been so generous.

"I can't express how much we appreciate the efforts made by Jim, Jenny and Mark to organise fundraising and so many others who have taken part.

"We are heartened that people have done this for us and really appreciate it.

"At the moment Thomas gets around in his wheelchair but with the trike he will be able to get out more and have some independence.

"It has amazed us the amount of effort people have put into raising money for the trike and we are incredibly grateful."
