FRIENDS and family of a Crediton man who died after being struck by a train at Crediton Railway Station have presented £2,076.30 to the charity, Samaritans, in his memory.

Tony Hall died after the incident, on the rail line from Exeter to Barnstaple, at about 9.30pm on Friday, October 19.

His friends organised a series of fundraisers, most of which took place at The Ship Hotel.

These included a sponsored leg wax, auction, raffle, pool tournament, karaoke and much more.

Tim Hunt, one of the organisers explained: “The town really pulled together and a lot of people turned up for the events we put on.

“The raffle attracted 53 prizes and I would like to thank the many Crediton businesses who donated these.

“We have raised an amazing sum of money in memory of Tony and while it was emotional it has also got us talking about things like depression and being aware of who is not around and keeping an eye on each other.

“I’d like to thank everyone who helped raise this money and we hope it really helps the Samaritans.”

The money was received by “Crediton Courier” general manager and Samaritans volunteer, Sean Constable.

Sean said: “On behalf of Samaritans I’d like to express how much we appreciate the massive support for the charity shown by the people of Crediton, including the incredible support from the local businesses who donated raffle prizes.

“Samaritans support people who are struggling with difficulties within their lives, you don’t have to be suicidal to call.

“We hope that with our support, people can help feel they have a safe space where they can share their thoughts and feelings confidentially and without judgement.

“The funds raised in Tony’s name will go towards maintaining this highly-valued free service for all in times of crisis and those struggling with daily life.

“As a volunteer myself, I hear how much need there is for this service and I am truly grateful and proud of all those who helped to make such a fantastic amount."
