AT A time when the work of the Royal British Legion is as relevant as ever it has been, I am delighted to announce the magnificent total raised for the Poppy Appeal in the Crediton area was £11,262.82, exceeding last year's record by £1,744.85.
I am very grateful to the army of volunteers from Crediton, Sandford, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Yeoford, Shobrooke, East Village, Hookway and Uton, who collected door-to-door, distributed and collected boxes, stood outside Morrisons and in the High Street, counted money and helped in any other way.
It was a truly wonderful and much appreciated team effort.
I would also like to thank all the local businesses who supported us, particularly Le-Roy Funeral Service and World Choice Travel (Evans Travel) for allowing us to use their premises as distribution centres, Four Seasons and Landscore Stores for raffle prizes and Morrisons for allowing us to collect £2,897.37 outside their premises.
This year's appeal was boosted by organised events including the RBL Coffee Morning, Newton St Cyres bingo, Morchard Bishop Millennium Book donation and the RBL Christmas Lunch, where a raffle raised £206.50.
Finally and by no means least, my thanks go to the people of the Crediton area who supported the appeal in such a generous way. Every penny has been passed on to the national Poppy Appeal, where it will be put to good use supporting our ex-service personnel and their families. Thank you.
