A “POP-UP Museum”, will take place on Saturday, September 17, in Winkleigh Community Centre.
Not one but two castle mounds, William the Conqueror’s first hunting park, a Fair dating back to 1262 and a World War Two airfield; Winkleigh, despite its remoteness, has an extraordinary heritage.
The Winkleigh Society is hosting a Pop-up Museum and is inviting villagers to bring, display and share their photographs, archives and recount their stories in The Story-Tellers chair (courtesy of Winkleigh Pine).
There will be guided walks, art workshops for children and adults and the re-creation of an old school photograph.
Penny Griffiths, chair of The Winkleigh Society, said: “Winkleigh’s Pop-Up Museum will strive to be immersive and inter-active, in the spirit of modern museums.
“There will be characters in costume, a dairy corner, a rolling viewing of film archives but, most importantly, a chance to listen, share and understand how our lives fit into and affect the village landscape.”
She added that it was a flagship event for The Winkleigh Society, seeking to reveal the stories, struggles, traditions and culture of the people of Winkleigh and Hollocombe.
To bring visitors to the event up-to-date, two modern-day local authors, Shirley Cowling and David Watkins will be selling signed copies of their work.
The Pop-Up Museum will be held in the Community Centre, Castle Street, Winkleigh from 10.30am and the event will be heralded by a peal of bells from All Saints Church.
