ELECTION candidates not submitting their nomination papers on time, others rejected because their proposer was not a registered elector and having to resubmit papers – these were just some of the reasons why there were some surprises in parish and district council nominations in Mid Devon.

There were insufficient candidates standing for Crediton Town Council, which means that the following are elected uncontested: Crediton (Lawrence) ward – Elizabeth Brookes-Hocking (independent), Bill Dixon (Non-Party candidate), Anne Hughes (independent) and Michael Szabo (UK Independence Party). Crediton (Boniface) – John Downes (Liberal Democrat), Joyce Harris (Independent Deputy Mayor), Frank Letch (Town Mayor 2008-present), Nick Way (Liberal Democrats), Daniel Webb and Andi Wyer (Crediton Town Councillor).

Notable absences are Richard Adams, Gina Ford and Paul Vincent.

Other local parishes where elections will take place for parish councillors include Cheriton Bishop.

Here candidates are Kim Bastyan, Christopher Carter, Philip Dicker, Peter Endacott, Sasha Metters, Sasha Metters (* submitted with an invalid proposer), Paul Mitchell, Steven Sitch, Timothy Vooght and Gillian Westcott.

Thorverton Parish Council persons nominated: Roger Cashmore, Stuart Crang, Mary Ette, John Hodge, Neville Lane, Richard Pocock, Chris Pollard, Graham Sims, John Spivey, Robert Turner, David Waldron and Janet Wills.

FOUR CONSERVATIVES ELECTED UNOPPOSED

With the close of nominations for Mid Devon District Council the District Conservative Group said it was "delighted" to announce that four of its candidates were being returned unopposed as there were no other candidates nominated against them.

In Lower Culm, comprising Willand and Uffculme, Richard Chesterton and Bob Evans have been returned having already represented the ward for eight and four years respectively.

They will be joined in Lower Culm to represent Uffculme and Willand by Jill Doe, from Lapford, who is standing for the first time.

In the west of district John Squire is the only nominated candidate in the Upper Yeo ward and will also be returned unopposed.
