PLANNING permission is being sought to turn an outbuilding off Crediton High Street into a one-bedroom home.

The one-storey structure is currently used for storage and can be accessed by walking down a narrow alley between 107 and 108 High Street, which are both Grade II-listed buildings.

If Mid Devon District Council grants Graham Paradise from North Tawton permission, the current cob and brickwork construction would stay the same but the tin cladding would be swapped for rendered blockwork and the tin roof for a flat roof with a glass reinforced plastic covering.

The home would have no parking space, no garden, and only have windows on the same side as the door.

“The new openings in the proposed dwelling have been orientated in such a way to minimise its impact on neighbouring residential properties and retain its own privacy, for example there are no proposed windows opening on to the neighbouring car park,” planning documents say.

“Despite its proximity to the town the building is very quiet and would afford someone a small but functional home in a thriving town within Mid Devon.

“The dwelling’s size, central location and lack of garden will make this an ideal property for first-time buyers, or a rental opportunity for those with a modest budget, meeting a need for those trying to get on to the housing ladder.

“The applicant owns the area immediately outside the property which will allow for the storage of bins and bicycles.

“The building’s change of use will have a limited impact on the other properties within its immediate vicinity.”

You can see the application on Mid Devon District Council’s website under reference 25/01071/FULL.

Members of the public have until Wednesday, August 20 to comment on the proposals.
