THE Crediton Singers, who have been singing together since 2009 and are well known for their fund raising concerts, are thrilled to announce that they have a new musical director, Philip Lancaster.

As well as being a leading authority on some of the lesser byways of 20th century British music and poetry, Philip is a local composer, writer and professional baritone singer.

He sings regularly with the choirs of Exeter Cathedral and Buckfast Abbey and has a busy life as a soloist on the concert platform and in recital in Devon and across the country.

He appeared in the recent stunning performance of Bach’s St John Passion at Holy Cross Church in Crediton in February.

Philip was the bass soloist, taking the part of Pilate - so local people may already know what a fabulous voice he has!

Philip has already introduced the choir to some delightful songs celebrating the abundance of spring, which the singers are very much enjoying, as well as some of his own compositions, including the round “Monday’s a Good Day for Singing”.

The choir do indeed meet on a Monday evening - from 7 to 9pm - at the “Elephant on the Green” and enjoy singing a wide range of songs – from simple rounds, through African gospel, to madrigals and more popular numbers - as much as they enjoy each other’s company.

It is a community choir, so open to all, there’s no audition and no requirement to be able to read the score.

Friendly and relaxed, and with a break for tea and cake, new members are warmly welcomed.

Why not go along and try them out (avoid the half term break on May 26).

Your first session will be free. If you would like to speak to someone in advance, please contact Philip on 01363 84600 or email: [email protected].
