OVER almost 40 years members of Crediton and District Lions Club have raised thousands of pounds for Crediton and its local community.

This year has been no different. In the days before Christmas, members and helpers were collecting at Crediton’s two main supermarkets to support Crediton Talking News.

This is a service for people with eyesight difficulties, for some it is a bridge back into the community. They are given an MP3 player with a memory stick that is replaced each week with new recordings in a completely free service.

More than simply a newspaper, Crediton Talking News service is a comprehensive information package that includes pieces from a variety of magazines such as Good Food, Gardening, Reader’s Digest, Woman’s Weekly plus news from the internet and other sources.

Currently more than 40 people receive the Crediton Talking News.

A team of Lions Club members were holding the collecting bucket and we found the president., Eric Parkes, on duty in Tesco.

He said about the service: “We have been told by people that it is like having a friend in the room, it is a comfort.

“One person said that when she wakes in the night and cannot get back to sleep, playing the News makes her feel less lonely and more comfortable.”

As well as the Lions Club, Crediton Talking News is supported by the Town and Parish Fund (TAP) and the South West Foundation.
