I WAS very pleased to read a report from a recent Crediton Town Council meeting in the Courier (May 24) which reported that Cllr John Downes had taken up the fight to obtain a suitable crossing for Exeter Road and its residents.

All I can do is to wish him well in his quest, because when I was a member of the Town Council, this was something that I had been doing on a very regular basis, until my resignation last year.

The residents and I had regular meetings when the Exeter Road Resident Association was in existence; this matter was always high on the agenda for discussion.

Similarly, events concerning Exeter Road were brought before the Council on a very regular basis, be it the lack of a safe crossing or the volume of traffic, or pollution, by myself, which in turn was reported in this newspaper.

One of the Courier's regular contributors, Mrs Joan Farley will recall how I tried, without success, to get the matter of the lack of dropped curbs before Devon County Council.

This was particularly relevant when Mr Farley was forced to use a wheelchair, following recent surgery.

There was much deliberation about this matter, but to date I am not aware of any progress.

If some has been made, then I will stand corrected.

Good luck, Cllr Downes and I mean this sincerely, because the residents of Exeter Road deserve better.
