Saturday, September 13 CREDITON 43 SOUTH MOLTON 5 AS is often said, patience is a virtue and it is one that Crediton possessed in abundance after being frustrated by a spirited South Molton side for the best part of an hour. The visitors had plenty of passion in what was as much a damage limitation exercise for them and, whilst they had their moments, they never really did enough to create any doubt about the outcome. The move up a league takes some adjusting to and South Molton showed, at times, that they will eventually cause opponents problems. Crediton were out of the blocks in style and almost scored from the kick off but Molton managed to get their tackles in when and where it mattered and managed to haul full-back, Matt Dayment, down 10 metres short. However, a Mark Lee penalty put the home side ahead on eight minutes and five minutes later Lee broke clear down the touchline and a perfectly timed pass put scrum-half Mike Pearce in for a try which Lee converted. The game then got bogged down into a forward battle and the anticipated glut of tries for Crediton never materialised. Molton defended well but the home side did not help themselves by pursuing the tactic of keeping the ball amongst the pack which tended to play into the South Molton hands. Half time arrived without any further score. Whatever was said during the interval had the desired effect on the Crediton team and a succession of penalties at five metre scrums brought the reward of a penalty try which Lee converted. With sufficient breathing space, Crediton began to open their game up and a superb handling move ended with Dayment going over in the corner. Molton were stirred into action and they were rewarded with a try from No 8, Joe Blackford, after a series of mauls on the Crediton line. The home side bounced back and centre, Chris Simpson, used his strength to crash over after another good handling move, with Lee adding the extras. Simpson was the instigator of the next try when he broke the gain line from half way before putting fly-half, Rob Milton, in for a try which Lee, again, converted. The final try came when Lee put out a long pass to Milton who gained ground before putting winger, Matt Walton, away. Evergreen prop Wayne Reed was up in support to receive the final pass and fall over the line, with Lee converting again to give Crediton a comfortable win and maximum points from the opening two games. Fixtures tomorrow, Saturday, September 20 are as follows: First Fifteen (no game); Second Fifteen v South Molton Seconds (home); Third Fifteen v Torrington Seconds (home) and Colts Fifteen v Bideford Colts (home). PH Crediton Youth Rugby Under 14's Sunday, September 7 BARNSTAPLE 17 CREDITON 22 THIS was going to be a tough opening game. Barnstaple are a tough skilful side that beat Crediton 43-0 at the last encounter back in December. The Crediton under 14s have worked hard and improved much since then. The game was played on the first team pitch setting a great spectacle for the game ahead. Crediton kicked off and pressured hard with good rucking and ball possession. Even so, they were soon 12 points down, before Tyler Farley put points on the board with a brilliant drop goal. Not long after Will Crang went over to score a try with captain, Matt Cooke, hitting the upright to just miss the conversion. Owen Cooper soon scored and this time Matt Cooke put the ball between the posts to bring the score line to a close 12-15.  Barnstaple quickly replied with a score on the wing leaving a difficult angled missed conversion stretching the score line to 17-15.  Crediton, however, continued piling on the pressure and Will Crang went over for his second try between the posts, leaving Matt Cooke with an easy kick to give Crediton the lead. The final score was 17-22 to Crediton. This was a great performance from everyone in the team.  One match does not win the season but it is a great start.  Well done Crediton Under 14s. Sunday, September 14 CREDITON 32 EXETER CHIEFS 7 Crediton Under 14's played their second game of the season against the Exeter Chiefs at home. The Chiefs are a much improved side from last season, as are Crediton, and both teams were fired up for the game ahead. Crediton started off a little disjointed, but despite this put the Chiefs under pressure from the start and were the first to score. The Chiefs however, soon replied with a converted try, and at half-time, with another try from Crediton, the score-line was a tight 10-7.  In the second half Crediton began to settle and showed good running and ball handling skills. This together with a dominating pack from the start, and some strong hard tackling, Crediton ran in another four tries with one converted, taking the final score to 32-7.  Despite the Chiefs only scoring once, Crediton had to battle hard against a good team. The try scorers for Crediton were Will Crang (2) Josh Woodland (2) Ben Harvey and Ethan Power. The captain, Matt Cooke, kicked one conversion. A good performance from all the boys with Sam Wilson playing his first game for the club. Well done to all. Sean Poulton Coach
