A PARTY for family and friends was held to celebrate the 100th birthday of Ronald Mitchell (Ron), at Chulmleigh Golf Club, on Sunday, October 9.
Ron was born in Buckland Filleigh where he attended the local school, before moving to Shebbear School, which he left at the age of 14.
After leaving school he worked on farms before joining the Home Guard during the Second World War.
He spent 23 years working for Saunders of Bow making concrete blocks before retirement.
He married his wife Nora in 1936 and the couple will be celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary later this year.
They spent 69 years living at Zeal Monachorum before moving to Chulmleigh 10 years ago to be closer to family.
Ron has a real passion for gardening and most of his spare time was spent on his own garden as well as tending gardens for others after retiring.
Most Sunday afternoons the couple could be found in Torrington enjoying a Hocking ice cream and watching the world go by.
