AT the June meeting of Lapford Over 60s, chairman Ron Kercher introduced guest speaker Paul Rendell.
Paul gave a superb illustrated talk on Old Dartmoor, showing pictures on a large screen, going back through the ages.
First was one of Chagford before the motor cars came, with donkeys pulling the local dustcart and old buses.
Back then Chagford was quite a tourist destination, and he showed pictures of the charabancs there in the late 50s, also at the popular Badgers Holt. He also showed the old Brentmoor House, where a Nanny had smothered the young child in her charge.
He gave the story of Bill Pengelly, and his working horses. He showed the old Dartmoor Prison, which was used for the French Prisoners in 1803, and a shot of a Mrs Richardson and her hounds who used to help track escaped prisoners, and lots more interesting titbits.
Lapford Over 60’s next event is on Thursday, July 28, for a Cream Tea at the Bow Garden Centre, members to meet at Lapford Car Park at 3pm. Anyone else wishing to go should call Margaret on 01363 83934.
At their previous meeting Jane Epstein had given a most interesting talk on New Zealand.
