THE Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon and the South West Heritage Trust are hosting a joint exhibition to mark the Coronation of King Charles III.

The exhibition, called "Right Royal Occasions", opened at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon on April 22 and runs until July 8.

On display are documents from the North Devon Record Office alongside museum artefacts relating to Coronations since Queen Anne in 1702.

Visitors will be able to discover more about how people in North Devon marked the 20th-century Coronations of Edward VII, George V, George VI and Elizabeth II.

Documents including programmes, posters and photographs of parties are available to view alongside artifacts such as royal mugs and plates.

Museum Manager, Alison Mills says: "This is a fascinating exhibition which will capture the hearts and minds of those in North Devon with an interest in the Royal Family, and is a fitting tribute to the Coronation of our new King. We are really pleased to have worked alongside South West Heritage Trust to bring this free exhibition to our visitors."

Head of Archives at South West Heritage Trust, Janet Tall says: “People have celebrated Coronations for centuries. The first reference to funding being used to celebrate such an event in North Devon relates to the Coronation of King George III on September 22, 1761.

“Festivities often involved parades, church services and special meals. By the 20th century it had become traditional for local communities to come together to celebrate important royal events.”
