THE Newton Revels is a bi-annual event organised by a large number of volunteers from Newton St Cyres. This year's event was held on the afternoon of Sunday, July 6, which fortunately was bright and sunny with only one short shower. A very large crowd joined in the festivities and were entertained by Crediton Town Band, a demonstration of PUMA martial arts by Crediton and Copplestone Tae Kwon Do and a dance performance by Newton St Cyres Primary School. In addition there were demonstrations by the village football club, cricket club and sports were organised by Newton St Cyres Primary School. Children also enjoyed a bouncy castle and the giant inflatable challenge and adults were welcomed to "have-a-go" at riding the Rodeo Bull. Attractions included the Medieval Village, a working Steam locomotive, the Produce Show (where the Hole family won all three cups) and a number of sports including archery with Kirton Archers, target golf and Petanque. Lovely food was provided by the Crown and Sceptre servery, church teas and cakes and the French Café, which was run by the Twinning Group. A large number of local charities and organisations ran stalls, as did the Mini Market and there were displays by the History Group, Friends of NSC School, Parish Council and the Friends of the Arboretum. The Road Safety Group had a stand and were aided by the local Police and the Community Support Group organised by Simon Lovell (Publican of the Crown and Sceptre), who was recently voted the Newton Village Community Champion for 2014. Said Jim Enright, chairman of the organising committee: "The Newton Revels has two aims. Firstly to provide the villagers and the wider spread community with an afternoon of entertainment and secondly to raise funds for and by local charitable organisations. "We are very grateful to the very numerous local organisations who provided draw prizes and to the several hundred visitors who came along to enjoy the Newton Revels and to Bernaville Nurseries who supported the printing of the brochure. "Whilst we are still preparing accounts we confidently predict that we have exceeded our income target by raising in excess of £1,250 for local good causes. "My sincere thanks go to the very hardworking organising committee and to the numerous helpers on the day. There are too many to name but without them the Newton Revels could not take place. "Thanks too go the Quicke Estate for the use of their field for parking, the Rec for use of their facility and to the Parish Hall for use of their room and their tables and chairs. "A very big thanks too go to Stuart Dowle who kept everyone informed and entertained by his very excellent announcements, Eric Fee for organising the Sporting Challenge, Louise Woolacott for raising additional funds as well as obtaining a free banner from Exeter Signs, Clive Rendle likewise for his draw and the Art Group for a donation and, of course, to those who supported the event by purchasing draw tickets. "Apologies to anyone who I may have forgotten to mention but your support was very much appreciated too. Planning now starts for 2016." Alan Quick
