A SKATE Jam was held to mark the official opening of Crediton's much-improved Skate Park – and there are now hopes it could become an annual event.
The new facility, located on the site of the former skate park next to the Lords Meadow Leisure Centre, hosted competitions for skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX riders.
The skate park was officially opened by Mid Devon District and Crediton town councillor, David Nation and Jo Gurney, from Crediton Wheels, both of whom have been heavily involved in the youth-led project.
Cllr Nation said the opening of the skate park was a very special occasion.
"We do a lot for children but pretty much neglect teenagers. The lack of facilities for the early teens is worrying and needs attention, but the fact we've put in a facility like this is very important and worthwhile.
"It was also a great example of young people working together with other agencies to bring it about, so they have earned it and I hope they get a lot of fun out of it."
The new skate park, built at a cost of £80,000, was funded by Mid Devon District Council, The Big Lottery Fund, Devon County Council, Crediton Town Council, as well as contributions from developers and businesses in the town and grant applications.
Mid Devon District Council worked closely with skaters, riders and bladers to design the facilities. The former skate park was smaller and outdated.
Jo Gurney (26), speaking on behalf of the Crediton skaters, said they were all "very pleased" with the new skate park.
"We are grateful to all those involved. It is used every day and we hope to stage a skate jam every year."
Street art, which decorates the new facility, was completed by the young people with funding from Mid Devon's Community Safety Partnership.
In the future, when funding is available, David Nation said he hoped that it would be possible for the skate park to be lit fully at night and have a roof over it. Alan Quick
