AS a way to offer greater support to the wonderful carers in the Crediton area Unite Carers in Mid Devon is to run a monthly Carers Drop-In Café at the East Town Café, East Street, Crediton.

Starting on Thursday, December 7, and continuing every first Thursday of the month, the drop-in sessions will run from 2pm to 3.30pm.

If you give care to a friend or relative who can’t manage alone because of illness, frailty, disability or vulnerability then you are a carer.

You can drop-in for information, advice, support or a chance to chat with other carers over a cup of coffee or tea.

Christina from Unite will be there to help.

If you are unable to get to the café but would like to talk to someone about your caring role please contact Unite Carers in Mid Devon who will be happy to help.

Unite also hopes to expand its befriending service it offers carers in the greater Crediton area. In order to do this it does need some more volunteers.

A spokesperson for Unite Carers explains: “Befrienders visit carers, maybe going out for coffee or a walk. Carers often become isolated and having someone they can really talk to about how it is can be so important.

“Others might just want a conversation that is a complete break from their caring role. The commitment can be as little as two hours per month.

“We try to match people with similar interests so we are looking for all sorts of people. You would be supported by a staff member and there are regular reviews so if it isn’t right for either of you we can make a different match.

“If you would prefer to spend time with young people ‘The Kids Who Care’ project run by Unite also needs volunteers. As we have a club once a month in Crediton again it could be as little as two-and-a-half hours a month.

“If you would like to get more involved you could come to other clubs or join us on our monthly activity outing.

“Training is provided and expenses, including travel, are paid to all volunteers. DBS is required and will be paid by Unite Carers in Mid Devon.”
